Desperation Activates Faith

For she said to herself, “If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.”

Matthew 9:21 (NKJV)

In situations of desperation, our first option must always be prayer. When a mother’s child is sick, drastic measures are taken. Words such as, “Lord, heal my child,” are whispered, or in some instances, the blood of Jesus is applied. Additionally, some mothers say, “If only it was I who was ill”. Women are beautiful creatures of love, care, and nurture.

Today, we celebrate an unorthodox woman in the Bible. A woman who desperately needed a touch, a woman whose belief and use of the “If only” term activated her faith in Jesus to be healed. Her name is not mentioned, but her story is recorded in the two verses of Matthew 9:20-22. For twelve years, this woman suffered from an issue; she bled non-stop. We can only imagine the discomfort and the state of her mind during these years.

Repeated consultations and medications could not provide a cure or remedy. As women,  some of us can only sympathise with her in small measures because we share her experience too, but not for 12 years.

This woman heard about the miracles performed by Jesus in her local area. And she was desperate to make her final appointment. She mustered the strength and joined the crowd in anticipation of seeing Him, but when she couldn’t get to Him directly, she told herself, ‘Just touch the helm of His garments’.

Jesus realised this touch was like no other. This touch was one of desperation and faith. My sisters, Jesus is ever vigilant, alert, and always in a position to heal and bring restoration. This woman with the issue of blood experienced her healing by allowing her desperation to drive and propel her faith. I pray we learn to conquer our situations; by all means necessary, just like this woman. May we become radical to receive from Jesus so our lives can be transformed, restored, and purposeful.

Romans 8:37‭-‬39 tells us that we are more than conquerors through Him Who loves us. And nothing can separate us from His love. Do you believe today?
